Over three months ago the world seemingly came to a halt and with it many surfing communities around the globe. Those lucky enough to still find themselves in the ocean’s embrace, particularly on the East Coast, throughout the crisis were among the fortunate few.

The Eastern Surfing Association Board of Directors regretfully announces that they have cancelled all three ESA Regional Surfing Championship events for 2020.
Due to various reopening phases along the East Coast, it is highly unlikely that all three events will be completed in a timely manner prior to the the start of each location’s summer season.
The ESA strives for transparency and fairness for its competitors. If one regional event cannot be held, it is unfair for all competitors to run the others in order to qualify for ESA’s 2020 Easterns® Surfing Championship to be held September 20-26 at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina.
The ESA is excited to announce that its 2020 Easterns® will be a larger event in order to include more competitors. Details about the 2020 Easterns® qualification process is now posted on the ESA’s website.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our local district events this summer!

Another benefit of being an ESA member is having access to ESA’s informative online surf courses. Subjects include, but not limited to, surf forecasting, surf workout training, breath training, amateur to pro pathway, WSL priority and judging clinics.
Led by experts in each topic, these courses will be held every Monday, and several Wednesdays, at 7pm. Courses will vary in time depending on information covered followed by Q&A. On average, please plan for 60-90 minutes.
Participants must have a current ESA membership through September 30, 2020.

The Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) kicked off its online content this week by creating a series entitled “Talking Story.” The live online episodes bring former ESA competitors who are now well-known surfers, pro surfers and industry leaders together with ESA All-Star coach Jason Motes for a fun discussion and Q&A from viewers.
ESA All-Star coach Jason Motes and viewers chatted online with WSL World Champion CJ Hobgood this past Tuesday during ESA’s first episode of “Talking Story.”
“The saying ‘Talking Story’ is when people come together to share stories, history, opinions and ideas,” said ESA’s executive director Michelle Sommers. “It’s when two or more people choose to take time out of their day to slow down and talk.”
The first episode that streamed on Tuesday evening was with WSL World Champion CJ Hogbood. Hobgood surfed in the ESA before moving up the ranks to become a pro surfer and is now leading the brand Salty Crew. Recently, CJ, and his brother Damien, who is also a pro surfer, released the documentary “And Two if by Sea” that is now available on all digital platforms, including Amazon Prime.

The Eastern Surfing Association’s Board of Directors is continuing to monitor the situation relating to COVID-19.
All three ESA Regional Surfing Championships and ESA local events were put on hold last month and will continue to be on hold until further notice.
The ESA’s Southeast Regional was supposed to kick off the organization’s post-season championship season this weekend in Melbourne Beach, Florida, but will be postponed until a later date in May, if possible. The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Regionals scheduled for May 1-3 and May 8-10, respectively, will also be postponed to later dates, if possible.
“The safety of our members, competitors and officials are our number one priority,” said Joe Grottola, ESA’s Competition Director.

We are meeting regularly to discuss the impacts of the crisis and are actively working on plans that include postponement, or possible cancellation, of the three Regional events. We have also put all local ESA district events on hold until the social distancing recommendations are lifted. Our priority remains the health of our competitors and officials, and our commitment is to communicate regularly with our ESA family in the coming weeks.
We hope everyone stays healthy and safe in the coming weeks, and look forward to an exciting 2020 surfing season as soon as this subsides.
